Runway Report: Paris Menswear Fashion Week--Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2012/13--Photos + Runway Video

Dr. Frank-N-Furter Chic...

Neo-Punksters: Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Thom Browne is the menswear designer credited for the "shrinking" jackets and cropped too-short pants that were all the rage the last few years and seen on only the hippest of male fashionistas in NYC, Paris, Milan and Tokyo. I remember going to Barney's NY and Co Op and looking at those shrunken Thom Browne jackets and even trying one on and thinking "OK, I look like a FOOL!!!" But if I was very very skinny and a 22-year-old male model...I would TOTALLY wear it!" And as it's always with fashion, the too-short/too small/cropped silhouette has been making its way into the Menswear "mainstream" little by little in retailers such as H&M, TopMan, etc. But that was then, and guess what Thom Browne is up to now?

Hunchback of Notre Dame U: Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Yes kids, take a look at those Quarterback-worthy OVERSIZED shoulders, the padded sweaters. In addition to the "Thom Browne" stamp of shrinking and too-small. Now add: BIG BIG BIG! And think 80's Punks, S & M, Prepster Chic, Frankenstein, Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1920's-1930's Football, Rocky Horror Picture Show 's Dr. Frank-N-Furter all rolled up into one ensemble!

Sailor and Argyle Boys: Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2012/2013

There were certainly lots of references, influences and "themes" to take away from the latest Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2012/2013 show in Paris. I actually love seeing a Menswear Collection that breaks rules and goes "all out" showing extreme creativity (possibly for the "shock value" or yes, to get the front page of those daily fashion mags). Womenswear designers have been doing this for years so why can't menswear? I can't think of many menswear designers who do this, besides, say, Jean-Paul Gaultier.

Hitting the Fashion Slopes: Thom Browne Fall/Winter 2012/2013

So, kudos to Browne for "shocking and shaking" menswear; it needs a little bit of shaking. But notice that within all those "Punk Frank-N-Furter Hunchback of Notre Dame U"--looking get-ups, that I am sure the "general non-fashion" public might think is KRAZEEE...there are still some fabulous and actually very wearable clothes, like the hem-shredded shorts, the plaid coats and vests, the studded pants, from the photos at the top of the posting. Trust me, that's what will end up at Barney's NY come next Fall.

Modern Suit Boys...

Bizznessss Meeting: Lanvin Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Bow-tie Boy Wonder Alber Elbaz and his menswear designer, Lucas Ossendrijver showed their Lanvin Men's Collection today during the end of Paris Menswear Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2012/2013. And, I loved it! So that's why I am sharing with my devoted blog readers here. It was all about the extended and semi-exaggerated shoulder, nipped-in waist and gorgeous coats and pants.

Extended Shoulder: Lanvin Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Speaking of pants--the crotch is long and the waist is high. Boots are still being worn outside the tucked-in pants...as long as the trousers are slim. And yes, if I didn't have Home Mortgage Money to think about...I sooo would get me one of those jackets/coats like TOMORROW!!! This collection was one of my favorite ones--after seeing the photos and video.

30's Gangster Chic: John Galliano Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

As we all know, Bill Gaytten--former "Right Hand Guy" for fallen designer John Galliano--is at the helm of all things formerly touched by "the Man" himself. He designs Dior Pret-a-Porter and Christian Dior Haute Couture, as well as all the Galliano lines.

Bill Gaytten, John Galliano Creative Director/Designer

This past week, during Paris Menswear Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2012/2013, Gaytten unveiled the latest for John Galliano Men. After looking at the runway photos and video, it was simply BEAUTIFUL! The theme was 1930's and the elegant, chic man of that decade. The show went through all the archetypes of a 30's Man--from the UBER Gangsters in patent leather trench coats and side-styled fedoras, to...

Newsboy Love: John Galliano Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Newspaper boys in newsboy caps (of course!) and shearling-lined coats. Outerwear--including jackets and blazers were belted or with their own built-in waistband--emphasizing the teeny-tiny waist of yesteryear (and of the beautiful male models!).

Slicked: John Galliano Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Pants were either wide and lose or skinny/fitted. Big, metalized, patent-leather shoes and very, very slicked parted hair, finished off the total look. I almost thought I was looking at old photos of my Dad and my Uncle from when they were in their teens.

Football Goes Equestrian: John Galliano Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

The look was very Charles Lindbergh meets 1930's Football Hero meets Hollywood Star. There was luxurious fur shawl collars accenting semi-double breasted wool tweed coats, jodhpurs and even a vintage football helmet...or two.

Pea Boys: John Galliano Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

That's not to say that there was still a lot for the modern 2012 fashion-savvy man (with lots of money) to look at and incorporate into their wardrobe. Those aforementioned coats were GORGEOUS, the wide-legged "Clark Cable" pants were fabulously tailored and yes, I would even think about buying a riding pant--well, if I was 22 and had a 28" waist!

Violet Nights: John Galliano Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

For evening, there were deep purples, lurex, metallic's and an overall 1930's Dandy look that somehow looked relevant and oh-so-elegant--in 2012. At least to me.

I Can't Afford Rent...But I Can Afford a Fab Fur Coat: Gucci Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

More Milan Menswear Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2012/2013 Highlights--
Now, it's time for Gucci: Creative Director/Head Designer Frida Giannini showed her latest offering for Gucci Menswear Fall 2012 in Milan early this week. The silhouettes were thin, 60's-like and elegant--all the buzzwords that have been staples of the Gucci menswear collections as of late. Giannini's Gucci boy is a chic struggling artist/musician (not so struggling, if he can afford an $800 pair of pants!). She took this theme forward with this most recent collection.

Going to Torino: Gucci Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

The trousers were unusually loose at the hips and thigh but got stovepipe skinny down the leg and to the ankle. Lots of subtle elegant prints--like jacquard's, paisleys--seen in everything from those aforementioned trousers to jackets. And of course, being that it was Gucci--there were some GORGEOUS bags, sunglasses and shoes, the stuff that any of us will actually be buying! I was also loving the chunky sweater layered over suiting seen above!

Marlon Brandon meets "Glee" meets Prepster Trust Funder...

Bab Boy Prepster: DSquared2 Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

Continuing with Menswear Fall/Winter 2012/2013 Fashion Week in Milan, now it's time to pump up the sex appeal with none other than those Canadian boys--Dean and Dan Caten of Dsquared2. Renzo Rozo of Diesel owns a majority stake in the Dsquared2 label and yes, therefore the two skinny Canadian twins can have these fabulous campy--and very expensive shows--season after season--And I'm all the better for it--because A) I love me a campy Dsquared2 show and B) I also love the models...ooops, I mean the clothes.

Vacation from Swiss Boarding School: Dsquared2 Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

The show began--in typical Dsquared2 showmanship with a stage that was turned into a somewhat-rowdy classroom with model-students acting up--as if the teacher had just left the room--but then, the show--and collection itself went from rowdy students--to High Tailored Prepsters. Very fitted skinny jeans, UBER sharp coats and cropped jackets, a knotted neck scarf here and there, and elegant Alpine Winter sweaters and (Hello Rick Santorum!!) sweater vests!!!

Prom Season: Dsquared2 Men's Fall/Winter 2012/2013

I admit, part of me wants that oversized sequined sleeve parka above, just because I would LOVE to board a long transcontinental flight in that! I always love the styling of the Dsquared2 collections and from time to time, I have found myself printing some of these looks and use as "Muses" for my wardrobe. I just wished I looked like one of these boys...oh well...maybe in my next life.
